ANN CATHERINE CROSS

Founder, Artistic Director

Ann Catherine Cross has been a fixture of the Richmond dance community for 4 decades, and has produced, the best dancers, choreographers, and arts scholars in the area. She started ACCSD in 1981, and has tirelessly sought higher education for both herself, her children, and her dancers. She believes in providing quality dance education with a strong foundation in technique, performance quality, and versatility. She has brought teachers and guest artists from New York to Tel Aviv (Israel) to work with the kids and impart knowledge and experiences that they would never receive at any other dance school in this area. She is a vital force in this community, and a seasoned veteran in the business. She welcomes you and your family to check out what we have to offer, as we guarantee a high quality education that promotes excellence both in the dance studio and beyond.

 

Autumn Waddell

Artistic Director

Autumn Proctor Waddell was born and raised in Virginia, where she started her early years of training with her mother through the Ann Catherine Cross School of Dance, where she is currently the Associate Artistic Director. She had additional training at the Washington Ballet, Richmond Ballet, and the Virginia School of the Arts. She also had many opportunities to study closely under the direction of Luigi in NYC. As a young teen, Autumn was selected as one of the first National touring company members of the Hoctor’s Dance Caravan Jr. Caravan Kid program, where she studied intensely under the direction of Kit Andre, Mallory Graham, Jerry Rose, and Tommy Tune to name a few, while traveling Nationwide. She later continued her dance training into college. During this time Autumn was fortunate to have the experience of working closely with Milton Myers, studying and demonstrating the Horton technique at Steps on Broadway and at the Alvin Ailey School. She was also a scholarship student for two summers at Jacob’s Pillow in the contemporary program under the direction of Milton Myers. In the summer of 2005, Autumn traveled abroad to study at Danceworks Berlin in Germany, where she had the opportunity to study Gaga technique, which was founded and developed by Ohad Naharin, Director of Batsheva Dance Company in Israel. During this same summer she also attended Impulstanz in Vienna, Austria as Milton Myer’s class assistant/demonstrator. In the fall to follow, Autumn presented work in the Collaborative, Here Now Three at the Cunningham Studios, NYC, with Kyle Abraham, and Bridget L. Moore.

Autumn received her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Dance with a concentration in Modern from Marymount Manhattan College, NYC. She holds a Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) in dance performance and choreography from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. Upon completing graduate school, Autumn served as adjunct faculty at East Carolina University and the University of Virginia. She also co-founded and directs a summer dance program, We Are Artists, in the Richmond area which works to serve young aspiring artists in their continued creative process, technical training, and exposure endeavors. In the summer of 2009 she spent a month in Canada performing in the Montreal Fringe Festival and working intensely at Springboard Danse Montreal with BJM Danse Montreal. Autumn has worked extensively with various artists including: Kyle Abraham, Bill Young, Cheryl Therion, Rodger Belman, Bridget L. Moore, Milton Myers and VCU’s own Christian von Howard. She has also performed works by: Angelin Preljocaj, Pina Bausch, Merce Cunningham, Jose Limón, Jiří Kylián, Maguy Marin, Azure Barton and others. Autumn is currently a member of the Von Howard Project, directed by Christian von Howard, based in Richmond, VA and NYC. Most recently, she was fortunate to have the opportunity to visit and teach as a guest artist in Arezzo, Italy at the Accademia dell’ Arte.

 

Blake Roeder

Blake is the son of Ann Catherine Cross, and has been dancing his whole life. In his youth, he studied at ACCSD, Richmond Ballet, and Virginia School of the Arts Summer Program. He holds a BFA in Contemporary Dance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts as well as an MFA in Dance from Hollins University. He has also studied at New York University, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Danceworks Berlin, The Palucca University of Dance Dresden, as well as apprenticeships with The Semperoper Ballet Dresden and The Forsythe Company. He has been the owner of Aileron Performing Arts Studio since 2017 and has been teaching at ACCSD since 2003. He is the co-founder of We Are Artists, and has been producing independent choreographic and performance art projects since 2006.

 

Jennifer Palmer Greenday

Jennifer grew up dancing at Ann Catherine Cross School of Dance from the age of 3. Upon graduating from VCU with her Masters in Teaching, she spent 12+ years teaching in the public school system. In 2021, she decided to pause from public education and place her focus into full time work at ACCSD. She manages the daily office administration as well as teaches classes for our youngest dancers. Jennifer’s daughter, Addilyn, also dances at ACCSD and they both enjoy the moments spent growing and learning at the studio together!

 

April Massei

April started dancing at Ann Catherine Cross School of Dance at age 3.  She has over 30 years of dance and performance experience, as well as 20 years of teaching.  April has performed in theme parks such as Kings Dominion in Virginia and Paramount’s Carowinds in North Carolina.  She has also completed two contracts with Norweigan Cruise Lines on two ships based in Hawaii, performing in their productions.  Being a coast guard family, April and her family had numerous moves over the years allowing her teaching experience in multiple locations such as Elizabeth City, North Carolina and Houston, Texas.  In June 2012, she was thrilled to have moved back closer to resume teaching at Ann Catherine Cross School of Dance.  In 2016, April and her husband, Austin, began their own photography business and they have enjoyed every moment of this successful adventure!  April’s husband officially retired from the coast guard in 2019 and by December of 2019, they had moved back and are calling Mechanicsville, VA their permanent home. Her daughter, Aria, now dances at our Mechanicsville location.  April is excited to be back home and continuing her dance journey with Ann Catherine Cross School of Dance.

 

Jada Willis

Jada Willis, a Virginia native, started her dance training at the Academy of Classical and Contemporary in Chesapeake, VA where she participated in various regional and national competitions. While in high school, she attended The Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk, VA under the direction of Deborah Thorpe and Todd Rosenlieb. In 2017, Jada graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA with a B.F.A. in Dance & Choreography. During her time at VCU she performed in multiple faculty works and had the opportunity to represent VCU at the 2015 & 2016 ACDA Mid-Atlantic Conferences. Jada has spent summers at numerous dance programs, including Bates Dance Festival & The Philadanco Summer Intensive under the direction of Joan Myers Brown in Philadelphia, PA on partial/full scholarships. In 2018, Jada then moved to ATL where she had the opportunity to perform in works for the 2019 & 2020 Dance Canvas as well as their Atlanta Contemporary and Dance Canvas Summer Choreographic Residency in 2020. Jada has worked with Atlanta based artists such as Patricia “Patsy” Collins, Jessica Bertram, Danielle Swatzie, and Raianna Brown. In the summer of 2021, Jada performed for Kanye West’s DONDA show at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA. She then began her first year of becoming a faculty member at The Neighborhood Ballet during the 2021-2022 school year. Since July 2022, Jada has been a fitness coach/instructor for [solidcore] and has recently transferred to the Short Pump and Libbie Mill studios here in Richmond, VA.

 

Lisa kohler

Lisa grew up dancing at ACCSD when her dad took her into the studio and asked Miss Ann if there was anything she could do with her?! She spent numerous years assisting and teaching in the ACCSD classroom. At age 18, she had the opportunity to tour with Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus dancing and performing as an aerialist, where she met her husband. After living and raising her family in Las Vegas for over 20 years, she is back in Mechanicsville teaching classes once again! Lisa is also very proud and honored that her daughter Ruby Jo is getting the opportunity to experience and grow up with the ACCSD family!

 

Nakita James

Nakita studied at The Right Way Dance Studio from age 6 to 16. She attended The Dance Spot from age 16-18. She holds a BFA in Dance from VCU.

 

Anna Jane Glascock

Anna Jane studied with ACCSD from age 7 to 18. She attended VCU where she graduated with a BFA in Dance and Choreography. She has also studied at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, as well as the Israeli Choreographers Workshop in Israel. She has been an active dancer and collaborator with We Are Artists from 2008 to the present.

 

Emily Yarbrough

Emily began dancing at ACCSD when she was 3 years old. She continued her dance education at Christopher Newport University, where she participated in their dance program and annual performances during her time there. She graduated from CNU in 2014, with a BS in Biology and a minor in Business Administration. In 2017, she graduated from the Blue Ridge Community College Veterinary Technician program. Emily is a full time Licensed Veterinary Technician, and enjoys teaching at Ann Catherine Cross when she can!

 

Haley schools Custalow

Haley has been dancing at ACCSD since she was 3 years old, and has been assisting in the classroom since she was 11. She graduated high school in 2019 at 16 years old and is currently in nursing school, set to graduate in December of 2022! She has been teaching and continuing to assist since graduating high school and has loved every minute of her time at ACCSD. Haley says, “Dancing has always been one of my biggest passions and getting to share that with these kiddos is a huge blessing and honor!”
